The essential length for a neck strap is 68cm. In my opinion， this is the optimal length when strictly focusing on the act of shooting. Whether holding the camera horizontally or vertically, this length is than sufficient。

For shooters who concentrate on the moment and don't bother checking the monitor after every shot - like those using a Leica M - or for modern shooters who prefer the viewfinder over the rear LCD on compact mirrorless cameras， I believe the needlessly long straps of the past are no longer必要性。
