Realistic length.
The required and sufficient length of the neck strap is 68cm. I think this is the optimal length when specializing only in shooting. This length is sufficient when holding the camera both vertically and horizontally. I don't think the pointlessly long straps of the past are necessary for shooters like the M-type Leica, who concentrate on shooting and don't check the monitor every time, and for modern shooters, who use compact mirrorless cameras to check photos on the viewfinder rather than the rear monitor.

The Ideal Length.
The essential length for a neck strap is 68cm. In my opinion, this is the optimal length when strictly focusing on the act of shooting. Whether holding the camera horizontally or vertically, this length is more than sufficient.
For shooters who concentrate on the moment and don't bother checking the monitor after every shot—like those using a Leica M—or for modern shooters who prefer the viewfinder over the rear LCD on compact mirrorless cameras, I believe the needlessly long straps of the past are no longer necessary.
